According to the latest report, Africa Solar Outlook 2025, published by the Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA), 2024 saw a tenfold increase in installed energy storage capacity across the continent.
[pdf] Solar PV projects are expanding rapidly, with over 2,000 MW expected online in the next three years, pushing the region toward energy independence. Key projects include Eritrea’s 2.3 MWh BESS coupled with a 450KWp solar PV site and Kenya’s 11.2 MWh BESS spread across 7 rural sites.
[pdf] The Red Sands project will be the largest standalone BESS to reach this stage on the continent, designed to store power during off-peak hours and release it when demand is highest—providing essential grid stability and flexibility for South Africa’s electricity network.
